What candidates need for a Live AI interview

Available onEvery plan

Before Nova starts, every candidate runs a short device check called Let's get you set up. This page tells you what it checks, so you can brief candidates and answer their questions. Candidates have their own guide at Live AI interviews.

What the candidate needs

  • A camera. The camera checks are part of a Live AI interview. A candidate who can't use a camera can ask you for an accommodation. See Camera and window checks.
  • A microphone. A built-in microphone or a headset.
  • A stable internet connection.
  • A window that fills the screen, on a computer. The interview window must be at least 90% of the screen's width and height.
  • A current browser. The device check gives step-by-step help for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari when the camera or microphone is blocked.

What the device check does

The check runs on its own. The candidate sees Four quick checks before you start: camera, microphone, window size and connection.

CheckWhat the candidate doesWhat passing looks like
CameraSits facing the camera with their face in view. Nothing is recorded during this check.Face in view
MicrophoneSays a few words, for example their name.We can hear you. Microphone OK.
Window sizeMaximizes the browser window. The interview window fills your screen. Please keep it this way until you finish.
ConnectionNothing. It runs on its own.Connection OK, with the time to our servers

If the camera can't see a face clearly yet, the candidate can click Continue. The camera check keeps trying during the interview.

If the job has an approved no-camera accommodation for this candidate, the check says Three quick checks before you start: microphone, window size and connection. Your camera is not used.

The full-size window rule

The device check does not continue until the window covers at least 90% of the screen's available width and height. The candidate sees:

Please make this window full size (maximize it) so the interview fills your screen. Once it does, you can continue. During the interview a much smaller window or another window in front counts as a warning.

Phones and tablets skip the size check.

During the interview, leaving the window, putting another window in front or making the window much smaller counts as a warning. Three warnings end the interview. See Camera and window checks.

When the candidate can't make the window full size

Some candidates can't use a full-size window, for example because they use a screen magnifier or need another app next to it. They can skip the size rule:

  1. On the window size check, the candidate clicks I can't make this window full size.
  2. They can add a reason in What gets in the way? (optional).
  3. They click Continue with this window.

After that, window size warnings are off for this interview. Leaving the window or the tab still counts as a warning.

You see on the report that the candidate could not use a full-size window, with their reason if they gave one.
